Neighborhood Watch Program
posted: 3/27/2007
Your Sheffield Lake Police Department is in the beginning stages of creating a neighborhood watch program. There has been much concern from residents about it, I'll try to explain it and the need.

Neighborhood Watch - What residents can do about crime. Worried about crime in your neighborhood? You are not alone. Most likely your neighbors are concerned too. Crime can shatter a neighborhood. It can create a climate of fear and mistrust. People may withdraw into their homes, residents may lose contact with each other. As isolation increases, so does crime, crime thrives in neighborhoods where residents keep to themselves and don't get involved. A criminals job gets a lot tougher in a neighborhood where people are watching out for each other.

How does a neighborhood watch work? It works by showing residents they are not powerless against crime, we do it through crime prevention training. Residents at first may be wary about taking part. Protecting your neighborhood is a big job, the police can't be everywhere, a watch group can be their extra "eyes and ears" by looking out for: suspicious people, suspicious vehicles, and suspicious activity.

Don't hesitate to call law enforcement if you see anything suspicious, even if you are afraid it might turn out to be nothing. Some things watch groups protect their neighborhoods against are:

1. Violence against children

2. Break-Ins.

3. Vandalism

4. Drug dealers / gangs

5. Assaults

6. Family Violence

Help make your neighborhood a safer place, join with us. Neighbors watching out for neighbors.

If interested please call the Sheffield Lake Police Department at 440-949-7131 ask for Chief Shepherd, Sergeant Schuster or Sergeant Keenan.
